Frilford Heath EARWIGS - 45th year

EARWIGS HISTORY formed in 1980
How the society evolved.
The EARWIGS was officially established in February 1980 after discussions amongst a group of players at Frilford Heath Golf Club. The alternative society at that time (the EGGS) had required their new members to play off a handicap of eighteen or less, thus excluding many elderly golfers who were seeking a social and friendly game during the week.
Suggested names for the new society included “West Oxford Golfing Society” – this was hastily vetoed by the Club Secretary. The EARWGS name became the acceptable choice.
The inaugural group including George Hemmings, George Cannon, Des Mallon, and others left the bar and retired to the dining room to establish rules. It was George Hemmings who then suggested that the word “impeccable” was inserted to make the title EARWIGS, and thus project the unblemished image of our group.
The initial structure of the Society was as follows:-
President Colonel C. Maguigan
Vice-President George Cannon
Chairman A. T. Spyer
Deputy Chairman J. Macdonald
Honorary Secretary Des Mallon
Captain Des Mallon
Contact Philip Bolton
